Usability Index (total score ÷ number of tests)668696

About the scores

Each task can be tested according to five different criteria - navigation from the home page, navigation using the A-Z directory (where present), searching on Google, searching using the site's internal search, and the readability of the page. Scores are assigned according to 10 = Very easy, 8 = Easy, 4 = Difficult, and 1 = Gave up. As more users complete any given test, the score for each aspect of each task becomes a mean average of all the individual testers scores, and thus the more tests are completed the more reliable an indication of the usability of the website can be seen. The total scores in the table are thus the sum of the averaged scores for the whole suite of tasks which have been tested.

The Usability Index is the sum of the scores of all the tests which have been carried out, divided by the number of tests which have been taken for this council, resulting in an index score between 1 and 10, with 6 being the score which a nominallly usable website with room for improvement might be expected to achieve. If any criteria have had fewer than 15 tests, or the site as a whole has had fewer than 50 individually tested items, the final Index scores are shown in a grey background to indicate insufficient testing for the result to be a reliable indicator.

The Importance column shows the mean average of how important all the testers considered the ability to complete this task to be, ranging from 0 = Unimportant to 5 = Very important.

Specific comments made about this council

Adult education courses - find information - 2013-12-05
List of courses is a .pdf - a proper online course directory would be preferred in the modern era.

Broken street lights - report - 2013-12-13
I shouldn't have to give you my full contact details (including home address) in order to report a broken street light. A map on the page would have been good. I'm not a fan of the 'quick links' sidebar as a primary navigation method myself - that should be for bonus content, not content the user is actually looking for. Internal search resulted in a screen full of .pdf documents.

Councillors - find who mine are - 2013-12-13
A bit more prominence on the home page would have been good; comparatively few people might be interested in this information but it's still important from the democratic accountability perspective.

Cycling strategy - find it - 2013-12-13
Navigation found information about cycling, but not about cycling strategy or policy. Google search took me to a website called Better By Bike, but I've no idea if this represents the council's strategy for cycling or if it's independent. Internal search came up with a load of .pdf documents.

Economic condition and strategy for the area - find it - 2014-02-06
Relevant page turned up as no.2 in Google search (after Wikipedia). Disappointed that content tied up in pdfs. No open data. Home navigation doesn't give good enough options. Ditto for Business page, which is what I clicked on. Gave up: no links to economy. Irritating Socitm survey pop-up! A-Z: lists economic information - takes straight to right page. Internal search: top hit.

Events - find council ones - 2013-12-16
A-Z listing for E doesn't have an entry for the 'event finder' page, only 'events for under 5s'.

Library book - renew - 2014-02-14
Very easy link from site homepage, however link to the library website from the 'Renew items at the library' page is broken (404).

Local history - find out about - 2013-12-16
Many items on the pop-out navigation from side panel were off the bottom of the screen (on laptop); I had to scroll them up and then hover again. Popup survey requests are irritating. Can't click on main area of text search box - have to click slightly too low in order to focus on it. (OSX / Chrome / Macbook non-retina)

School places - apply for one - 2013-12-05
A-Z index is quite hard to find, hidden up in the top right corner.

Taxi driver - complain about one - 2013-12-16
Typing into the internal search box in google chrome didn't work very well - took several clicks in the box before it would let me type.

Unitary Development Plan / Local Development Plan - find it - 2013-12-13
Internal search result was a load of .pdf documents.
